In the hymnbook of the Bible, a lament psalm is a God-ward song of pain that leads to trust. Psalm 88 just might be the exception that proves the rule. Or perhaps it's just that sometimes faith is hard to see in the dark. This song keeps us honest about life; no fake, plastic smiles here. In it, we see the grittiness of the Christian life on display in almost every verse and it ends on an unsettling note: "Darkness is my closest friend" (NIV).
