Open Door Baptist Church Covenant
Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (John 1:11-12; Matthew 28:19-20), we do now, in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into this covenant with one another as one body in Christ.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort (John 13:34-35; Philippians 1:27; 2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Peter 3:11) to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines (Hebrews 10:25; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23; Jude 3); to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and spread of the gospel through all nations (1 Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 8:6-7).
We also engage to maintain family and private devotions, to rear our children in a Christian environment; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:15; Deuteronomy 6:4-7; Acts 1:8; Matthew 4:19; Psalms 126:5-6; Proverbs 11:30); to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger, to abstain from the abuse of alcohol and drugs (Ephesians 5:15; Philippians 2:14-15; 1 Peter 2:11-12; Ephesians 4:31; 1 Peter 2:21; Colossians 3:8; James 3:1-2; Habakkuk 2:15); to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior (Titus 2:14; Matthew 6:33).
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love (1 Peter 1:22); to remember each other in prayer, to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech (James 5:16; Galatians 6:2; James 2:14-17; 1 Peter 3:8); to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and, mindful of the rules of our Savior, to secure it without delay (Ephesians 4:30-32).
We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word (Acts 11:19-28).
